At the Amish Quilt Shop, Mike sees a Lone Star Quilt for $550 and a Country Quilt for twice as much. The dealer offers Mike both quilts in exchange for Mike’s Wedding Wreath, which is worth $800 and his Sampler quilt, which is worth $900. Should Mike make this trade? Why?
Twice $550 is 2 x 550 = $1100, plus $550 = $1650. Mike’s stuff is worth $800 + $900 = $1700.
So if Mike really likes the quilts he is trading for, and doesn’t like the ones he is trading away, he should make the trade because the price difference is not all that much. He’d probably have to pay more than the $50 difference in taxes if he sold his stuff and used the money to buy the other two quilts anyway.
