All About Appliques and What to Put Them On
Appliques are like embellishments for clothes. Where patches are meant to repair or cover holes, appliques are meant to add decoration, flair and a bit of the wearer’s personality. There are tons and tons of patterns, shapes, sizes and color schemes to choose from. If you’re feeling really creative you can even design your own. Here are some of your options as well as tips on how you can attach them to your clothes and what clothing items they work on.
For just about everything you can think of there is an applique for it. If you want something seasonal, there are patriotic, Valentines Day and St. Patrick’s Day choices plus a huge selection of Christmas choices like snow flakes, Christmas Trees, wrapped presents, reindeer, Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, candy canes and more. If you are looking for something to show off your favorite sports, choose from golf, football, soccer, the Olympic rings, bowling, tennis riding and more. Suppose you are into arts and entertainment, then you might like ballet slippers, musical notes or a magic hat. Kids might get a kick out of animal choices, dinosaur choices and sea creature choices, while teens may like a peace sign, lips, flowers or butterflies. Finally there other choices like basic shapes, western options, fruits and much more.
In addition to type, you can also choose the material that your applique will be made from. A wide range of materials are used such as beads, feathers, gem stones, lace, fabric, shells, rhinestones and sequins. There are so many choices you will be able to find exactly what you are looking for.
Appliques also come in a variety of sizes. The size you will want will depend on the type of garment you plan to put it on. For example, if you plan to put it on blue jeans, then you will want something relativity small. But if you plan to put it on a jacket, like a letter jacket then you will want something bigger. Also, you should keep in mind the size of the garment. For example, jeans for a kid will need smaller ones than jeans for an adult. Other clothing items that you can decorate include shirts, pants, hats, skirts, sweaters and jackets.
Most appliques can be sewn on to your clothing like a patch, and some can be glued on. When sewing them on you will want to use what is called fusing paper to hold it in place while you sew. You should also use a zigzag, tight stitch. This will keep the ends from becoming frayed in the wash. Special fabric adhesives can also be used to attach these decorative pieces to your clothing and often hold just as well, if not better than sewing them on.
If you are a retailer and want to sell these decorative embellishments in your store, you should order them online. There you will have tons of choices and you will find numerous places that offer you wholesale prices. This will save you a lot of money. The only requirement to purchase them from a wholesale website is that you have a state issued resale tax ID certificate.
Appliques are a fun way to show your creative side and your specific passions. They are a huge expression of personal taste and there are options for everyone from kids, to teens, to adults. When picking out the perfect one for any outfit, season or holiday, use your imagination and get creative. This is a great opportunity for self expression, use it!
