How A Quilt Artist Transformed A Simple Craft Into An Art Form
Try to imagine what it’s like to grow up on a remote property in a cold climate. Every day is a struggle for survival. You can’t afford to waste a thing. What little money that comes in through your labors is spent on necessities like clothing for your family. You wear those clothes until they are almost completely worn out.
You know the value of your possessions and don’t let anything go to waste. Therefore, when your clothes wear out, you keep the remaining scraps and use them for making things like curtains and bed covers. The bed coverings made from those scraps are called quilts. The first quilt sets were laboriously hand sewn from small scraps of worn out clothes.
In order to make your quilts cozy and warm, you learn from your geese and ducks, who fluff their feathers to keep warm. You collect and save all the feathers and separate the coarse larger feathers from the fluffy white down. Little by little, you fill your quilt with them until it is filled with down and warm as toast. Oh, what a luxurious feeling!
Winters are long where you live and you have a lot of time on your hands, because you are indoors so much. To pass the time, you start making more decorative quilts from the brightest and best swatches of material you have. You fill these with your finest down. Because money is short, you take them to the market to sell.
On one random day at the market, a wealthy woman from town notices your handiwork. She is so impressed that she commissions you to make a down quilt for her. She will supply you with the cloth, because yours is far too coarse for her. You gratefully accept her offer.
This may not exactly be how the first luxury quilt set was sold, but it’s probably pretty close to the truth. Quilts today are almost all luxurious looking, but there’s something about a hand-stitched quilt that still captures the imagination. In fact, at least one well known quilt artist got her start by stitching together quilts in her freezing Orkney Island one room cottage.
This quilt artist lives on an isolated property in the Kentucky hills. Her quilts, however, are hanging in major galleries throughout the country and even overseas. She hasn’t changed her lifestyle all that much, though. Her husband doesn’t cut firewood with a hand saw, but he does cut it himself, using husqvarna chainsaws.
There may not be a profound moral to this true story, but it’s inspiring nonetheless. It goes to show how a humble craft of necessity can be elevated to the status of high art.
