Food To Feed An Army
Lori Ann took out two more square cake pans and began to pour the batter in. She was making lemon cakes now. Earlier she had baked a huge sheet cake with chocolate candies in the batter. No doubt that would be the favorite but she wanted something light too. Later she’d frost them with a yellow glaze and put chocolate chips on top of the sheet cake.
She took the sheet cake out and frosted it quickly. This one will look pretty, but, everyone will go for that chocolate cake first. She knew from experience. She loved to bake and had a difficult time resisting the urge to make a third cake.
They expected a large group of people to spend the afternoon and evening here. When the doorbell rang, she planned to serve snacks and a punch she had chilled. Kids would drink soda and she’d use paper cups for them. She mentally went over the list of food. Chips and dip, cheese and crackers, pretzels and nachos. She hoped they wouldn’t stuff so much that they didn’t eat the grilled food.
For those strictly healthy-food people she had a ton of veggies and dip. The house would be filled to the brim with both food and guests. Out on the patio the umbrella was up and the table and chair patio set washed clean. There were odd lawn chairs scattered on the patio and some on the grass. There was a redwood picnic table for the kids to sit at.
Before the day was over, there would be two babies crying and toddlers fighting over who got to sit at the little picnic table. Her sister’s new baby would be carried in, cradled gently in his graco snugride infant car seat. She couldn’t wait to see little Scott. She set out bubble soap for all with extra wands for when they lost the first ones.
The men would play a little basketball and drink a little beer. She secured the ladder to the above ground pool for the last time. Well maybe she’d do it once more before the day was over. Can’t be too careful about safety she thought.
Her husband Todd was getting the outdoor grill fired up and ready to go. There were dozens of hot dog and brats. Hamburgers too. It was the food everyone expected at an outdoor party. The pickles, olives and hot peppers were chilled and ready to carry out. The various salads were all prepared too.
As she showered and dressed in shorts and a t-shirt that said kiss the cook, she began to eagerly anticipate their arrival. She straightened out their bedroom. Then before going downstairs, she went in and smoothed the quilt on her son’s loft bed. It was so much easier than nagging him to do it. Maybe tomorrow he would remember.
