There are two methods of green web hosting. These are renewable energy credits (REC) and alternative energy. Webhosts purchase REC to offset a portion of their electric energy. They obtain energy from national power companies. National power companies have plants with renewable energy source. Webhosts with REC get half of their electricity from renewable energy plants. REC permits are expensive, albeit web hosts aim to lessen energy consumption. Through this, they are able to minimize electric consumption from carbon burning.
Moreover, companies use alternative energy. In alternative energy method, web hosts build their own renewable energy plants. They obtain electricity from their own energy sources. In the United States, green website hosting uses solar energy. They install solar panels on the roofs of offices and buildings. In remote areas, some companies put up windmills. Windmills gather wind and convert it to electricity.
Most businesses prefer REC over alternative energy. An REC package is less expensive than alternative energy. Installation of solar panels and windmills is pricey. It can cost hundred thousands of dollars. Green website hosting companies find it difficult to generate money for renewable energy plants. Therefore, they resort to the REC method.
Most REC packages have a hosting reseller cpanel. Reseller panels are incentives for renewable energy sourcing. These are given by national power companies. There are several green web hosting companies in the market.
