Need some help/advice!?
I have this desk that I got for free (found it on the side of the road)and am hoping to refurbish it and use it as my sewing desk. While it has good bones to it, it really needs some TLC. The woodworking part is taken care of because my Dad isn’t necessarily a carpenter but can build just about anything. My question is, The hardware is still in pretty good shape but needs cleaned up. I was wondering if anyone knows how to go about cleaning it without damaging the floral motif on it. Also, once it is cleaned would it be able to be spray painted. It is brass (I think) and has some petina (sp?) on it. Could the petina(sp?) be removed with light sand papering or what?

recommend NOT trying to clean drawer pulls if you want to maintain any value as collectible, desk appears to be circa 50′s hardware is most likely brass plated and you may remove plating with harsh cleaning . if you insist removing patina use metal polish like “Brasso” but use light touch .When you remove hardware , scratch the back side to see if they are plated or solid brass then you’ll know if you can safely buffout the pieces..
