Finding Quality Quilting Fabric For Your Handmade Quilts
Even those who may not have a trained-eye for detail can still appreciate the beauty of handmade quilts. With quilt patterns that look impossible to accomplish by hand, almost anyone can realise how hard it must be to reach such a high level of expertise.
If you’re new to quilting, the first thing you should consider is the quality and type of fabric you want to work on.
Once you’ve decided on a fabric, you can choose your quilting fabric patterns. When determining which fabric and pattern to choose, a handful of factors will come into play, including your capacity as a quiltmaker, the purpose of the quilt and most of all, who will use the quilt.
For example, if you plan on creating a quilt for a baby girl, then it’s best to choose fabrics with a feminine color. You can also take into account the decor of the child’s room so your quilt can match it. Recommended colors for quilts typically range from the cool purples, greens and blues, to the warmer yellows, reds and oranges. Your choice of color will depend on your preference; cooler colors will be conducive to a relaxing atmosphere, while warmer colors will be more energetic and playful.
Aside from colors, the quality and texture of the fabrics for your quilt are also important. Again, this part boils down to preference. Your quilting fabric can either be soft and smooth, or sophisticated and captivating to the eyes. Quilters typically opt for cotton fabrics as they are easier to cut, sew and mark. Cotton quilts are also perfect for children because of their soft and cuddly fabrics. Quilts for decorative purposes on the other hand, are better off using crisper fabrics which don’t pucker easily. This allows you to enjoy your work for many more years to come.
Remember to start slow. Your first quilt should be a work of passion—you don’t want to be frustrated because of any difficulties you may run into. Take the easy route and learn to enjoy quilting first.
