Some Thoughts On Garage Sales

When planning or considering a garage sale one should be aware of local protocols or regulations. Each neighborhood or community has different regulations and requirements. Many, however, do not. The main premise behind a garage sale is to dispose of non essential, weathered, redundant, or undesirable/unwanted items. This can also be an opportunity to reduce clutter and make space for new purchases.

A garage sale or yard sale as it can be called takes place in the owner’s yard or out of one’s garage. Some communities designate community wide garage sales where owners can showcase their wares in one location making it easier for the buyers. There is no real constraint as to the type of items that can be sold. Some can have anything from an electric guitar for sale to a coin collection or a fish bowl. Any remaining items are generally donated to charity or simply thrown out.

For the buyer, a garage or yard sale can offer some unique solutions to household needs. There can be that extra piece of furniture or accessory that can complete almost any decor. For example, a multi piece room furniture set which is no longer manufactured can be made whole again with a matching item sometimes found at such sales. As a caveat, the buyer should always be ware, and make sure the item is properly discounted for any defects.

Clothing and fabric items are also common items. Certain items such as curtains, carpets, and area rugs are quite popular. Used clothing depends more on personal tastes, as well as quality and vintage appeal. More challenging sales can be such items as bedding collections.

Sometimes garage sales are offered by more motivated sellers, who might be undergoing a foreclosure or bankruptcy. In such an event, one might be able to get some terrific discounts. As an example, a full size convection oven can be a virtual steal. However, portable appliances are usually the first to go because of their size. Come sellers do provide a delivery service. It all depends on the seller.

Not all communities welcome the occasional yard or garage sale. Much of this is dependent on the socio-economic level of the neighborhood or community. Typically the more affluent and low income neighborhoods tend to have the least number of yard sales. The middle class regions offers some of the best opportunities for buyers. The reason for this is that more often than not, the other sellers are quite satisfied donating their goods to charity rather than spend the effort or time to conduct a sale.

Finally, for those who are more tech savvy can use the internet to do their bidding. There are many dedicated websites that cater to buyers and sellers alike. In fact, there are not only social networking sites that allow for goods to be advertised, but also community group websites that allow for personal items to be advertised. There are also charities that are willing to pickup certain items, but they are rare. In short, there are many options for the garage sale enthusiast.
