What type of fabric am I looking for to make a quilt from?
I’m adept at sewing and applique, but I’m about to do a whole quilt. When I go to the fabric store to look at fabrics, what should I tell the salesperson I’m looking for? Am I looking for a cotton or something? Something soft and traditional, but not quite Jersey-cotton soft. and eavy, I’d like it to be a sturdy quilt
If you go to a shop that’s dedicated to quilters, then the staff can help you pick out great fabrics, and the shop will carry great fabrics. If you go to JoAnns or Hobby Lobby, the staff might or might not know anything about fabrics or quilting.
Good fabric is expensive, however, I think that if I’m going to spend a good amount of time making something, I want that something to last. If you get your fabric at a discount store, then it might last, but probably it won’t.
Personally, I prefer 100% cotton fabric for my quilts.
I suggest doing a throw pillow or two with one, four, or nine pieced, quilted blocks. This will get you used to piecing the blocks, and generally constructing a quilt block.
