How do I express the area of the garden as a function of its width ?
( ALSO, I know I have to use L-W but why ?
It is not clear here what you mean by the width. Since this garden is L-shaped, there isn’t just one rectangle here. I’m going to show you how to express the area, but if I end up using the wrong variable, you’ll have to adjust the formula.
First, draw a dotted line from the corner of the building to the line labeled x. Now you can see that you have two rectangles. We’ll find the area of each of these and add them together to get the total area.
Let’s start with the one on the left. The length of this one is y and the width of this one is w, so it’s area, A1 = yw.
For the other one, we know the width is w, but what is the length? The length is x – w, because the length from the dotted line to line y is equal to w. Hence, A2 = w(x – w)
Now the total area, A = A1 + A2 = yw + w(x – w) = yw + wx – w^2 = w(y + x – w)
