North Wales For A Caravan And Camping Holiday
When considering a holiday in the UK, the standard places come to mind – London for the nightlife, theatre and museums and galleries, the Northern counties such as Yorkshire and Cumbria for the lakes, dales and winding valleys and Devon and Cornwall for a for a holiday on the seashore. Scotland has its strongly rooted heritage of castles, whicker, heather strewn hills and national dishes such as smoked salmon and haggis!
Let’s try a different them though, Wales could be your ideal UK destination. Its not just an unpredictable climate and laverbread delicacies (seaweed to you and me). There is a splendid quantity of wide ranging countryside, thriving cities such as Cardiff and Swansea and sandy beaches at Cardigan Bay, Tenby and the Gower Peninsula. Of all of the counties in Wales, the Northwest and Snowdonia has some of the most striking environment. If you choose self-catering there are a selection of housing from cottages and farmhouses, and many a riverside caravan park near to the Snowdonia National Park.
A charming rural village in the Conwy Valley is Betws-y-Coed in north-west Wales. It’s nestled in a valley close to the point where the River Conwy is joined by the River Llugwy and the River Lledr. There is a museum at the railway station with a shop, restaurant and miniature railway. The historic Fourteenth century church of St Michael is one of the oldest in Wales and definitely worth seeing.
Of outstanding notice are the countless bridges along the River Conwy. Pont-y-Pair (otherwise known as the bridge of the cauldron), built in 1468, is pounded by formenting water after storms. Numerous sign-posted walks about the closeby countryside begin close by this bridge. A mile or so away is the Miner’s Bridge, on the Capel Curig road, where the miners crossed over the river via a steep ladder.
The Waterloo Bridge was built of iron by Thomas Telford in 1815 carries the A5 over the River Conwy, has the inscription “This arch was constructed in the same year the battle of Waterloo was fought”. Also think about visiting the grand Conwy Falls leading from the road to Pentrefoelas and the beautiful Fairy Glen near to the A470 road where the River Conwy streams through a small ravine.
In the months of March and April when daffodils are blooming, the big sky overhead whilst hiking in Snowdonia are great occasions to clear the Winter blues and sharpen your appetite for regional dishes such as grilled trout, roast lamb and afternoon tea would not be the same without that Welsh specialty Bara Brith a fruity teabread. Don’t forget that it you love seafood, the waters around Anglesey for example seabass, mussels and scallops.
