Nursery making noise..is there a limit?
I live in a block of flats in London and there is a nursery directly underneath me and they are noisy all day, is there limits on how much noise they can make? it has been annoying me for years, the flats used to belong to the council but were all brought by a company. thanks for the help.
First off you have my sympathy. IT IS A Nursery and very young children are noisy (fact).
Couple of things to look into.
Is it a legally registered Nursery (child care business). Check with town/city/local license bureau.
What is the “agreement” with your ‘flat’ as far as “commercial” businesses operated in your building.
What are the “quiet” hours and are these rules being followed by the nursery. (eg. no noise before 8am or after 10pm).
Options you can try:
You may need to put carpet down to muffle the sound. Will not eliminate totally, but may help.
cheaper option: buy ear muffs. BOSE, makes sound proofing ear muffs that block noise.
Nicely, you can request to meet with the owner/operator of the Nursery. and ask if it would be possible to have one room as a quiet space for the children. This room would be located under a room located in your flat, that you could spend a reasonable amount of time throughout your day…
you can try carpeting just this room and close a door to help muffle noise.
It ‘sounds’ like it is tough situation but you do have options. Have other neighbors been troubled by the sound too. Can you get a petition in place to have ‘quiet times’, put in place or limit the amount of children the nursery can care for at any given time during the day or weekends.
